OFFLINE DICTATION FOR MAC

You shouldn't need Wi-Fi to type with your voice. MumbleFlow gives you fast, accurate dictation on macOS that works anywhere, with or without an internet connection. No subscriptions. No cloud uploads. Just press a key and talk.

THE PROBLEM WITH DICTATION ON MAC

Apple has built dictation into macOS for years, and it works reasonably well when you have a stable internet connection. The “enhanced dictation” mode sends your audio to Apple's servers for better accuracy. But if you turn off the enhanced mode and rely purely on the on-device model, the quality drops noticeably. Punctuation is inconsistent, it struggles with technical vocabulary, and there's no smart text cleanup.

Then there's Wispr Flow, which has become popular among Mac users who want better dictation. It's genuinely good at transcription and text cleanup. The catch: it requires an active internet connection for every single transcription, it costs $15/month ($180/year), and it uploads your audio to cloud servers. For anyone who works offline regularly or cares about where their voice data goes, that's a dealbreaker.

MumbleFlow takes a different approach. It runs the Whisper speech recognition model directly on your Mac using whisper.cpp with Metal GPU acceleration. Text cleanup happens through a local language model (llama.cpp). The result is dictation that's fast, accurate, and completely independent of an internet connection.

WHEN OFFLINE DICTATION ACTUALLY MATTERS

TRAVELING

On planes, trains, or in countries with spotty internet, cloud-based dictation just stops working. MumbleFlow doesn't care about your connection status. You can dictate a full document at 35,000 feet and it works exactly the same as it does at your desk.

FOCUS MODE

Some people disconnect intentionally to focus. Writers, researchers, and students who turn off Wi-Fi to avoid distractions shouldn't have to give up voice typing. MumbleFlow works in airplane mode, Focus mode, or with your router unplugged.

UNRELIABLE NETWORKS

Coffee shop Wi-Fi. Tethered hotspots. That one corner of your house where the signal drops. Cloud dictation becomes frustrating on unreliable connections because every dropped packet means a failed or delayed transcription. Local processing eliminates that variable completely.

SENSITIVE ENVIRONMENTS

If you work in healthcare, legal, finance, or government, uploading voice recordings to a third-party cloud may violate compliance requirements. Local dictation keeps everything on-device, which makes compliance straightforward.

HOW MUMBLEFLOW WORKS ON YOUR MAC

01

Install once (about 1 minute)

Download the .dmg, drag to Applications. MumbleFlow downloads the Whisper model on first run. After that, it never needs internet.

02

Press Fn to start dictating

The default hotkey is Fn, but you can change it. A floating bar shows you it's listening.

03

Speak at your normal pace

No need to speak slowly or clearly enunciate. Whisper handles natural speech, filler words, and accents well.

04

Get clean text instantly

whisper.cpp transcribes your speech with Metal GPU acceleration. llama.cpp fixes punctuation and formatting. Text appears at your cursor.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Does Mac already have offline dictation?

macOS has a basic on-device dictation mode, but it's noticeably less accurate than the enhanced (cloud) mode. It struggles with punctuation, technical terms, and longer dictation sessions. MumbleFlow provides a much more capable offline experience using the Whisper model.

Will this slow down my Mac?

No. MumbleFlow uses Metal acceleration to run whisper.cpp efficiently on your GPU. It only uses resources while actively transcribing. When idle, it sits in the background using minimal memory.

Does it work with Apple Silicon and Intel Macs?

Yes. MumbleFlow supports both Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, M4) and Intel Macs running macOS 14 or later. Performance is best on Apple Silicon due to the unified memory architecture.

Can I use it in specific apps like Pages or Google Docs?

MumbleFlow works in any application. It pastes the transcribed text at your cursor position, so it works in Pages, Google Docs, VS Code, Slack, email clients, and everything else.
